Maryland Liberty Tree Project
Our Mission
Southern Maryland National Heritage Area, and other coalition partners, are honoring the nation’s 250th anniversary and celebrating Maryland’s central role in shaping the American story by planting a tulip poplar Liberty Tree in all of Maryland’s 23 counties and Baltimore City by the end of 2026.
History of the Liberty Tree
The Liberty Tree is one of the most powerful and enduring symbols of American resistance, community action, and shared civic responsibility. From its origins in Boston protesting the Stamp Act to its adoption across the colonies, the Liberty Tree became a living emblem of liberty itself. In Maryland, the Liberty Tree selected by the citizens of Annapolis in September 1775 survived the Revolutionary era and remains central to this story today. Maryland had the foresight to create exact DNA replicas from that Liberty Tree before it was brought down by a hurricane in 1999. Maryland is the only one of the original colonies to do so.
By planting new Liberty Trees across the state, the project honors the original role these trees played as gathering places and reminds us that democracy has always depended on participation, dialogue, and shared responsibility.
