Open seasonally.  Within this scenic wooded parkland are hiking and nature trails, picnic areas (grills and tables), picnic pavilions, playground areas, fishing piers, and a boat ramp (electric motors only, please).  The main attraction is a 60 acre fresh water lake which affords fishing, pedal boating, rowboating and canoeing.  Fishermen are able to catch bass, bluegill, trout and catfish.  Fishing supplies, fishing licenses and concessions are available.  Gilbert Run Park is located 8 miles east of La Plata on Route 6.

Enjoy a one-hour cruise around Solomons Harbor and the Patuxent River aboard the only Coast Guard-licensed log-hulled vessel in America.  Built in 1899, this National Historic Landmark was later converted from sail to power and served as an oyster buyboat until 1978.  Departs from the Calvert Marine Museum dock, weather permitting.  Assistance needed for wheelchair boarding (ramp).

Visit this restored 1934 seafood packing house to learn about the boom and decline of the region’s commercial seafood industries. The exhibits explore all aspects of oyster processing – from receiving oysters at the dock to storing, chucking, washing, packing and shipping the product to markets across the region. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Drum Point Lighthouse dominates the Calvert Marine Museum’s waterfront. This screwpile, cottage-type light is only one of three remaining from 45 that once served the Chesapeake Bay at the beginning of the 20th century.

The Calvert Marine Museum is the only museum on the East Coast that is home to two lighthouses, rich maritime history and diversity of life in the Chesapeake Bay come alive. See a skates and rays exhibit, models, paintings, woodcarvings, aquariums, fossils and boats. Outdoor exhibits include a boat basin, river otter habitat and a recreated salt marsh.

Battle Creek Cypress Swamp, a 100-acre ecological sanctuary, includes the northernmost naturally occurring stand of bald cypress trees in America. A nature trail features an elevated boardwalk. The Nature Center houses live animals and exhibits. Classes, demonstrations, field trips and special programs are offered throughout the year. Reservations required for groups of 10 or more.
